Here’s a very popular question among pellet gun shooters…”How loud is the XXXX Pellet Gun?” and “Can I shoot it in my backyard without scaring my neighbors?”
I have a Gamo Hornet Maxxim in .22 cal and have been shooting in my backyard for a few months now…without any problems.
I live in master plan housing community where houses are very close together. My back yard in only 46 feet wide. My neighbors houses are most likely 12 feet from my house (exterior wall to exterior wall). They are very close.
I’ve always been concerned about my neighbors calling the cops if I shoot my pellet guns in the backyard. When I first got the Gamo Hornet, I only shot 2 pellets and then went into the house. It sounded very loud to me. But what does it sound like 2 houses away? After a few months of shooting, I felt confident and starting shooting like 5-10 pellets.
The other day I heard kids playing in their backyard (just 2 houses away) and a few dogs barking in the background. I shot about 8 pellets while this was going on and nobody even flinched. The dogs didn’t react and neither did the kids playing. They were oblivious to the noise. After I was done shooting, everything went on as before. I think my house blocks a good portion of the noise. It sounds loud to me while shooting but apparently no one else thinks so. The Gamo Hornet Maxxim measures 75 dB at 1 foot from the gun.
